Sanzaru, the three monkeys

Sanzaru is Japanese for “three monkeys”: the three wise monkeys who see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil. Their best-known likeness is a 17th-century wood carving above the sacred stable of the Tōshō-gū shrine in Nikkō, where monkeys were believed to protect the horses.

Their names hold a play on words. In old Japanese, -zaru means “not” and sounds almost like saru, monkey. So mizaru, kikazaru, iwazaru reads both as “see not, hear not, speak not” and as three monkeys. That is where the vase takes its name.
